Both products have 'prompt' at the centre and mean almost opposite things by it. PromptLayer treats a prompt as an asset: something written deliberately, versioned, reviewed, tested against examples, and deployed into a product — often edited by people who do not touch the codebase. That is a real and underserved workflow.
We treat a prompt as an event. A developer typed 'this fails when the token expires mid-request, fix it', got an answer, and the repository changed. Nobody will ever version that sentence or reuse it. Its value is entirely in the fact that it happened, that it explains a diff, and that it can be found again later.
One product curates prompts so they can be reused. The other keeps prompts so a change can be explained. A library and a ledger.
Why the distinction matters when you buy
Teams sometimes adopt a prompt manager expecting it to become the organisation's memory of AI usage. It cannot, because nothing routes ad-hoc developer prompts into it. A prompt library contains what someone chose to put in it — a curated set, kept current, which is exactly what makes it useful for its own job and useless as a record.
The failure mode is quiet: the library looks healthy, the coverage looks complete, and the ninety-nine per cent of prompts that actually produced this quarter's code were never candidates for inclusion.
Where PromptLayer is the right buy
If prompts ship in your product, you need version control for them, and you need non-engineers able to change them safely. We do neither, and building a worse version of it would help nobody. Its evaluation and collaboration features exist because that job genuinely requires them.
Our answer to 'do you have prompt management' is honestly 'no'. What we have is every prompt anyone on the team typed into an AI coding tool, with what came back and what changed on disk, searchable months later — which is a different sentence, for a different buyer, answering a different fear.
